Rediscovered Shocker ‘Hollywood 90028’ Coming To Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas Nationwide in June

Grindhouse Releasing proudly presents Christina Hornisher’s 1973 shocker HOLLYWOOD 90028, screening at Alamo Drafthouse theaters nationwide starting June 14, 2024.

HOLLYWOOD 90028 stars Christopher Augustine as an alienated porno-movie cameraman turned serial strangler. The supporting cast includes Jeannette Dilger, Gayle Davis, and Dick Glass.

HOLLYWOOD 90028 has drawn comparisons to PEEPING TOM and TAXI DRIVER. The film boasts an early score by legendary composer Basil Poledouris (CONAN THE BARBARIAN, ROBOCOP). The film haunted grindhouse theaters and drive-ins of the ‘70s and ‘80s as THE HOLLYWOOD HILLSIDE STRANGLER and TWISTED THROATS, but has never appeared on TV or home video in the United States.

Rescued from obscurity by Grindhouse Releasing. HOLLYWOOD 90028 now comes to theaters newly restored from the original camera negatives. The 4K restoration fully reveals the poetic, artful quality of Hornisher’s film and its striking camerawork by Jean-Pierre Geuens (LEMORA), who captured a final shot that has stunned critics, filmmakers, and audiences around the world.

HOLLYWOOD 90028 screened as a classic at the prestigious Sitges festival, and recently showed as an official selection of the 2024 Night Visions Film Festival in Helsinki. The Future of Film is Female hosted the New York premiere of the restored HOLLYWOOD 90028, highlighting Christina Hornisher’s sole feature as the rediscovered work of an independent woman director.

Following sold-out screenings at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema and The American Cinematheque in Los Angeles, HOLLYWOOD 90028 received raves from contemporary genre directors including Arkasha Stevenson (THE FIRST OMEN), Joe Lynch (SUITABLE FLESH), Anna Biller (THE LOVE WITCH), and Ti West (HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, X, MAXXXINE).

Hollywood 90028 screens this coming Saturday and Sunday May 18 & 19 at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland. Hollywood 90028 (hollywoodtheatre.org)

‘HOLLYWOOD 90028’ REVIEWS

“Surprisingly atmospheric and polished…an eerie hybrid of art film and 1970s grindhouse. ‘Hollywood 90028’ boasts one of the most incredible final shots ever.” (James Verniere, Boston Movie News)

‘Hollywood 90028’: From obscurity to the spotlight – Boston Movie News

“The sort of moment that fans of cult film live for: outrageous, unnerving, and the sort of thing you’d never see in a “normal” movie.” (Oscar Goff, Boston Hassle)

GO TO: Hollywood 90028 (1973) dir. Christina Hornisher // BOSTON HASSLE

“Uncommonly thoughtful and haunting…a proto-“Taxi Driver” wallow-in-neon-lit-depravity proving that back then the left coast could be just as seedy as Times Square.” (Sean Burns, North Shore Movies)

Review – Hollywood 90028 | NorthShoreMovies.net (wpcomstaging.com)

“HOLLYWOOD 90028 is one of the greatest films ever made about how truly brutal Hollywood’s dream factory can be on those whose dreams don’t come true — the final shot of the movie is stunning” (Jim Hemphill, IndieWire)

Hollywood 90028 Movie Was Forgotten. Now It’s Restored and Acclaimed. (indiewire.com)

“An astonishing example of the gold that can be found by panning through the polluted waters of exploitation cinema” (Marc Mohan, Oregon ArtsWatch)

“To watch 90028 is to slowly sink into the murky land of lost dreams that was, and still is, the underbelly of Tinsel Town. Christina Hornisher’s lens looks presciently and compassionately at how the human heart can become so twisted that the one thing more terrifying than committing murder can be finding love. It’s not just a horror film. It’s a statement. And if that wasn’t enough, she caps off the film with one of the ballsiest and most provocative shots possibly ever made in Hollywood!”

– Arkasha Stevenson, director of THE FIRST OMEN

“Somewhere between art film and exploitation.  A bizarre, lost, and lonely low-budget time capsule of Los Angeles with a final shot that needs to be seen to be believed.”

– Ti West, director of HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, X and MAXXXINE

MORE RAVES FOR ‘HOLLYWOOD 90028’

“Seeing Christina Hornisher’s film, HOLLYWOOD 90028, is like time traveling into the past to see the magnificent future of cinema.”

Nicolas Winding Refn, director of THE NEON DEMON

“One of the craziest final shots I’ve ever seen…the audience collectively and audibly GASPED. Hollywood Babylon tales don’t get much bleaker than this.”

– Joe Lynch, director of SUITABLE FLESH and WRONG TURN 2

“HOLLYWOOD 90028 is an unsettling, haunting film…an original and unforgettable viewing experience.”

— Anna Biller, director of THE LOVE WITCH

“Is it a formless, ennui-soaked art film or an unnerving serial killer thriller? Its mind-rending, final catharsis reveals it’s the essential missing link to both genres.”

– Dan Waters, screenwriter of HEATHERS

“A rare and exciting discovery…Powerful arthouse horror from a filmmaker who should have had a prolific career.”

 – William Bibbiani, THE WRAP

“I was blown away!” – Buddy Giovinazzo, director of COMBAT SHOCK and LIFE IS HOT IN CRACKTOWN
